Working together for a better world...
On 5th May 2012 Buddhists all over the Buddhists regions of Asia will celebrate Wesak day, Wesak Festival or Buddha day celebrates three major events in the Buddha's life, his birth, his enlightenment and his death.
The festival is one of joy, love and giving and offers buddhists the opportunity to gather together and take the Three Refuges and listen to the Dharma. People bring food to the monks in the monastries, they decorate the temple with flowers and light candles. Houses and streets in the villages are decorated with buddhis flags and flowers and villagers gather around a Buddha Rupa lit by candles and chant.
During the Vesak celebration, an image of the new-born Buddha - in the gesture of pointing to the Truth - is usually displayed in the shrine room. There is also the 'Bathing the Buddha' ceremony where water is poured over the shoulders of the Buddha as a reminder to purify their own minds from greed, hatred and ignorance. Gifts are taken to an altar to be offered to the Buddha statues. This shows respect and gratitude to the Buddha for his life and teachings.
Today at Leicester College Aramati, Me, Rachael & Lorraine had the opportunity to share this festival with students and staff. There was a display, nibbles and the dancing lions. Students and staff enjoyed the party feel as did we, I have photo's of Aramati in a dancing lion suit. As well as having fun it was the opportunity let the community know a little about buddhism and about the activities that take place at TBH.
Thank you Aramati for all your hard work in organising everything I feel it was a very successful day.
