Thoughts from the PCSR Gathering November 2014 (written for Transformations)

Thoughts from the PCSR Gathering

How heartening to be in a room full of people gathered together for the sole reason that we believe that psychotherapy and counselling should have a political and socially responsible edge. With the recent dispiriting trends in these psychological therapies, most recently expressed in the latest BACP consultation on its new ethical framework – part of a disturbing move towards accountability and outcome orientated practice  – it is encouraging…

Looking for new members of Tariki Community

For the past two years Tariki Trust has been developing its centre in Narborough, just outside Leicester. Besides our training programme in Buddhist psychotherapy, we are also now offering facilities for counselling and groups with a dedicated consulting room and a larger shrine space. Recently we have heard that one of our community members is planning to move on, which means that we now have space for short and long term residential members of the community. Ideally we would like to find…

Petetion

I don't know about you, but I have reached terminal disgust with the way corporate interests are ruining our planet and impoverishing most of the people who live on it in order to enrich a tiny minority of exceedingly wealthy people. A recent example of corporate greed in action can be seen in the way utility companies have raked in massive profits whilst energy prices are predicted to soar. So I have started a petition to nationalize energy for the benefit of the British public. If you are…

Retreat Cancellation

We regret that the retreat on the 17th of November has been cancelled due to a planning error---mostly on my part! We generally like to hold a retreat day after each forum in order to make the weekend complete for those who may have to travel far to come to the Buddhist House. And we shall continue to do this in future. But this time we are unable to do so and we apologize to anybody who had hoped to come this Sunday.

Richard Meyers

It was with deep shock and sadness that I heard today of the sudden death of Richard Meyers at the weekend. Our thoughts here at The Buddhist House are with him and with his wife Ruth.

Richard was a lovely man, kind, wise and thoughtful, always smiling, as he is in this photo. His love of nature fed his life and his spirituality. One of my fondest memories of him was…

Therapists Forum on the 16th of November

I would just like to let everyone know that we will be having a therapist's forum at the Buddhist House on Saturday, the 16th of November which will feature Margaret Meyer, a Gestalt therapist from Henley-on-Thames. Margaret has a great interest in the use of metaphor in therapy and she will be leading a discussion that will touch on this and related themes. The forums we have held in the past have always proven to be lively talking shops where ideas can be freely exchanged and debated.…

weekend retreat

Thanks to Manu Bazzano for making the trip up to Narborough to lead the Zen retreat this past weekend. We were a small group of eight people (including Manu), but there was a strongly focused energy that was felt by us all. Manu's leadership had much to do with the cultivation of that energy. We hope to build on the success of the past two silent retreats that have been held at the Buddhist House. Ian Finlay led a similar retreat several months ago and many of the people who came to his…

slight change to Zen retreat schedule

There has been a small change to the schedule for Manu's Zen retreat from the 4th to 6th of October. The Friday evening supper will be informal and will be served to guests upon their arrival rather than be a shared meal at 18:00. Zazen will also commence at 20:00 rather than 19:30 as it was scheduled before. We hope these two changes will enable more people to come to the retreat.

If you are interested in attending the retreat and still haven't booked a reservation please contact me…

Grounded in Faith: Psychotherapy and Pureland - paper presented at European Shin Conference 2012

Grounded in Faith: Psychotherapy and Pureland

Since the time of the Buddha people have looked to Buddhism as a source of salvation from their unhappiness and confusion. In the modern age, psychotherapy has become a route which many people choose to help them face and move beyond their personal suffering. Not surprisingly many Western therapists tend to gravitate towards Buddhist ideas and, conversely, Buddhists are often interested in exploring how their faith…
