Thoughts from a seminar: Association and Different Identities

Yesterday when I was presenting a seminar as part of our course block, I talked about three of the factors of conditioning. These are object relation, association and predominance, which are listed in the Abhidharma (which David talks about in Zen Therapy). We did various exercises to explore what these factors really are and how they operate in practice.

Perhaps Im obtuse but I suddenly…

Pathways, Compassion and Experience

In November I will be offering a 4 week course titled Pathways to Live a Compassiionate Life in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada. The course is based on Karen Armstrong's book Twelve Steps to a Compassionate Life. I was asked to write an article for a website regarding the course. Since I referenced Caroline in the article, I thought it may be of interest.

We were a little apprehensive weeks before the forum that the turnout would be low and so I actually discouraged a guest speaker from making presentation at this time for that reason. But in the end we had a respectable number of participants as ten people came, including three therapists from other orientations. After introductions, I led a discussion on anxiety which seemed to get the ball rolling and the…

European Shin Buddhist Conference

I attended the 2 1/2 day European Shin Buddhist conference with Caroline in Düsseldorf 31 August to 2 September 2012. Shin is short for Jo Do Shin Shu, which means pure land faith school (of Buddhism).

Grounded in Faith: Psychotherapy and Pureland - paper presented at European Shin Conference 2012

Grounded in Faith: Psychotherapy and Pureland

In the modern age, psychotherapy has become a route which many people choose to help them face and move beyond their personal suffering. Not surprisingly many Western therapists tend to gravitate towards Buddhist ideas and, conversely, Buddhists are often interested in exploring how their faith…
