More on how Neurons love Nature

This showed up in my mailbox, so I figured I would share it with you.

It's a salesletter, with a link to the site if you are interested.

I have no financial interest in it -- just wanted to disclose fully.

Still, the idea behind it is interesting.

Next time you need a boost of creativity, take a stroll outdoors.
"Writers for centuries have talked about why interacting with nature is important," says University of Utah psychology professor…

Last Saturday's Forum

Just a quick note to say how well last Saturday's therapist forum went. We had a nice, big turnout of fifteen people, many of them old friends and past students we hadn't seen in a long time. Keeping in touch with like-minded people who share in the values and believe in the possibilities of Buddhist psychotherapy is much of what the forums are all about. But it is also about bringing in new perspectives and fresh ideas which is certainly what Jonny White of the Karuna Institute brought in…

June Therapist Forum with Jonny White

I would like everyone who might be interested to mark the 15th of June as the date for the next therapist's forum. We are really looking forward to welcoming Jonny White, a psychotherapist and trainer from the Karuna Institute as our guest speaker. His topic will be "Intimate Mindfulness" and his presentation will include a talk, exercises and an open discussion. Most people are probably aware that the Karuna Insitute is another training program in Buddhist psychotherapy. So this forum will…

Buddhist practice and the Person-centred Approach

Hello!

I am currently looking for participants/co-researchers for my MA research study on Buddhist practice and the Person-centred Approach.  Ideally, I would like participants who call themselves 'person-centred' or humanistic.  The research questions will be based on therapist's experience of being present (or not) in meditation and in the therapy room (with an emphasis on 'experience').

Interviews can be done via Skype or face-to-face.  I have ethical approval from my…

Eighty years pass like a cloud...

I just read something I would like to share:

"If people are quiet, they can be quiet anywhere. If people aren't quiet, they won't be quiet here. Everything depends on you. Life is transient, like a flash of lightening or a dream. Eighty years pass like a cloud. We're born, and then we die. But before we receive this form, we had another face, our original face. We can't see it with our eyes. We can only know it with our wisdom.…

Ian sitting with friends

A quick note to say that the weekend retreat "Sitting with Friends" just finished and it went very well, indeed. There were only five of us in total--- Aramati, Debbie, Lauren, Ian and myself---  but I think everybody found it was a very comfortable and mutually supportive group. Ian deserves the lion's share of praise for this, not only for stepping in for Tom who wasn't able to make it, but also for bringing his own unique spirit of compassion and humility to his position as retreat…

Zazen in the Buddhist House

Due to unforeseen circumstances Tom Myojozen Radcliffe regrets that he will not be able to lead the forthcoming Zen retreat at the Buddhist House. We're sorry Tom can't be with us that weekend, but we wish him all the best and hope that we can welcome him  some other time. Fortunately, we are happy to have Ian Finlay take over as the leader of the retreat. Ian has been a serious practitioner of Zen and other non-dual traditions for over forty years. His teachers include Zen Master Hogen-san…

A prayer for all those in great distress after the shooting in Conneticut

Metta to all beings

Just found this lovely metta verse - I think maybe we will start to use it in our services.

For those without feet, I have love.

I have love for all with two feet.

For those with four feet, I have love.

I have love for all with many feet.

May those without feet do me no harm.

May none with two feet do me harm.

May those with four feet do me no…

PTSD & Buddhist psychology; Archaeology and OCT

This programme had two interesting items from an other-centred/Buddhist psychology perspective.

One Year Old

Today Tariki Trust is a year old.

What a year! It was hard to imagine on 12th December 2011 when a small group of us gathered in the sitting room of The Buddhist House for the signing of the Tariki trust deed how things would be by now, but I think if we had had a crystal ball, we would have been well pleased. A few weeks ago our charity number came through and we are now official. So, with this auspicious day in mind, I want to write and thank you all for your help through…

Tariki Refuge Ceremony

Have you ever watched a large flock of birds wheeling and turning in the sky? It is a magnificent sight. Like a single organism, an organic form, fluid and transparent, yet taking on shape and density, they weave and roll in a collective dance. This image of birds in flight came to me strongly as I thought of Tariki and the new developments this weekend.

This weekend a group of seven of us came together to affirm our Buddhist refuges and to commit ourselves to practice and mutual…

Grounded in Faith: Psychotherapy and Pureland - paper presented at European Shin Conference 2012

Grounded in Faith: Psychotherapy and Pureland

Since the time of the Buddha people have looked to Buddhism as a source of salvation from their unhappiness and confusion. In the modern age, psychotherapy has become a route which many people choose to help them face and move beyond their personal suffering. Not surprisingly many Western therapists tend to gravitate towards Buddhist ideas and, conversely, Buddhists are often interested in exploring how their faith…
