questions about the we

Hi Caroline

your question concerning what sort of we are Tariki is becoming is very interesting, it seems to be a state of becoming. I dont know if I have any answers or suggestions perhaps questions.

Sometimes a trickle of ideas needs time to flow, sometimes it needs holding together and containing, as you say a free for all becomes about chaos and a space for those who are more able, or can speak loudest.

Would a meeting about such questions and futures be…

Weekend course: Bodywork from a Buddhist Perspective

Today we finished a weekend of bodywork, exploring the use of bodyawareness in griefwork. It was the final weekend of the spring psychotherapy course block and the culmination of a good week of events.

Awareness of the body sense has always provided a foundation for my relationship with psychotherapy ever since I joined a bodywork group back in the mid 1980s run by a Buddhist woman. I have always seen the importance of working from the felt sense and of offering a grounded presence to…

Preparations

Anyone wanting to know what it is like living in The Buddhist House should arrive early for a course block. Jeff came this afternoon with Owen, the first arrivals of the student cohort of the February psychotherapy programme. Hardly in the door, he was up to his elboes in the sink, scrubbing potatoes for tomorrow's meal.

It has been a day of last minute cooking - a pot of blackbean stew for tomorrow evening, soup, Aramati's famous bread and butter pudding... and last minute…

BACK AT THE BUDDHIST HOUSE

Its been a month of travelling so far - At the start of February, Bob and I headed south. If we had hopes of sun, we got it, but with fiercely cold temperatures to go with it. A week spent collecting wood and then burning it in the kitchen stove kept us good and warm. We had a warm welcome in Belgium too. Last weekend we drove up through France to Ghent where I was running the third session of the Foundation Certificate in Other-Centred Therapy. Lut and Daniel made us very welcome and it was…

'Soundness' an effective, portable practice

Dear Friends

I would like to ask your attention for what Ida (my ex) has produced. I would not recommend such a 'product' in my spiritual friends circle, were it not that I happen to know the producer very well and moreover I know her philosophy and spirituality. Very special!

Basically Ida offers a special guided meditation/sound practice. In contradistinction however with methods that use sound or music to 'deepen' one's meditation or brings one in a mellow mood, in this…

Sunday Services

We have had a lot of snow over night, so yesterday I had been expecting four people to come to Sunday Service here at The Buddhist House today, but now it looks as if maybe no one can make it. When asked whether I would still have a Sunday Service even if there is only me here, I said “of course”. It feels very important to keep Sunday Service going even if there is no one there but me, but I am not finding it easy to articulate why.…

Ponderings

I have been reflecting recently on the speedy development of Tariki, and wondering about the whole phenomenon of identity, structure and authority. These are often subjects which are not discussed in organisations - sometimes with good reason - and most groups muddle along on ambiguous mixes of conscious and unconscious process.

Ive been involved in many groups over the years so starting a new organisation is an interesting process. I have seen the seedier side of most things which…

Grounded in Faith: Psychotherapy and Pureland - paper presented at European Shin Conference 2012

Grounded in Faith: Psychotherapy and Pureland

Since the time of the Buddha people have looked to Buddhism as a source of salvation from their unhappiness and confusion. In the modern age, psychotherapy has become a route which many people choose to help them face and move beyond their personal suffering. Not surprisingly many Western therapists tend to gravitate towards Buddhist ideas and, conversely, Buddhists are often interested in exploring how their faith…
