Singing and Mindfulness workshop at Tariki with Sian Croose

An account of the workshop from Rowan Songmith

Twelve of us came to Sian Croose's workshop at Tariki on Saturday 11th June - and what a treat it was! Sian is a member of the Natural Voice Practitioners Network, whose starting premise is that everyone can sing, and we didn't have to be able to read music nor to have had any experience of singing in a…

TALK Notes from San Francisco Zen Centre

Talk San Francisco Zen Centre: June 2016

Stories are important. The stories which we tell ourselves and the stories which we tell others shape our lives. Humans have told stories since time immemorial. Stories are the means by which we pass down culture and wisdom and spiritual truth. Stories also operate on a personal level: I tell you stories about myself and they have an effect on how you see me, how you then treat me and how I then feel about myself. I could tell you I am a…

Whose World are You In?

This summer I had a wonderful opportunity to talk about the things which I am passionate about at Buddhafield. In particular I wanted to talk about the way that the global environmental crisis cannot be separated from the personal and the psychological. The therapy world has to address the bigger picture or we simply collude with all the forces which are destroying our planet. In many ways this talk is a mission statement for what I believe we are doing at Tariki Trust. It holds together the…

Petition Against Ethnic Cleansing in Myanamar

Is anybody following the recent outbreak of ethnic cleansing of the Muslim minority by Buddhists in Myanamar? This atrocity is happening in the name of Buddhism and the ringleaders are said to be Buddhist monks. This is an outrage in all respects, though it may just go to prove that in the end Buddhists are no better and are sometimes worse than everybody else. But if you believe in the dharma and feel that among its most liberating attributes are its call for non-violence and belief in…

Thoughts from the PCSR Gathering November 2014 (written for Transformations)

Thoughts from the PCSR Gathering

How heartening to be in a room full of people gathered together for the sole reason that we believe that psychotherapy and counselling should have a political and socially responsible edge. With the recent dispiriting trends in these psychological therapies, most recently expressed in the latest BACP consultation on its new ethical framework – part of a disturbing move towards accountability and outcome orientated practice  – it is encouraging…

Grounded in Faith: Psychotherapy and Pureland

Since the time of the Buddha people have looked to Buddhism as a source of salvation from their unhappiness and confusion. In the modern age, psychotherapy has become a route which many people choose to help them face and move beyond their personal suffering. Not surprisingly many Western therapists tend to gravitate towards Buddhist ideas and, conversely, Buddhists are often interested in exploring how their faith…
