Hi Tom,
Meditation? I am not sure it's for anything and it certainly begins to lose its ever finer edge of discrimination whenever it is seen as something instrumental. Having said that, we all know that meditation often brings a number of benefits, including stress reduction as Jon Kabat-Zinn among others has documented.

But what is meditation for? What is living for?

Hi Bob,

Wow - I have tried to use meditation for all kinds of things in the past but now?

It just seems to be a natural thing to do.

Just been reading Ram Dass and here is another take on meditation or other such practices.

"All methods are about getting you from where to seem to think you still are to where you don't think you are anywhere"

"All methods are spiritual materialism, they are all in the framework of the reality in which you think you are somebody who came in to the world with something to do, and where you able to just give up the whole framework and do it that would simplify the whole matter.

On the other hand every time you tried to do it, you get caught trying to do it, or if every time you do change your level of consciousness you get dragged back to another level, or if all that lightness that appears in some beings who are free does not seem to apply to you then you look around for methods to clean up your act"

I think this is such a refreshing way to look at my practice and I love the fact that he is a Jew, who loves Christ, Buddha and Krishna.

Grounded in Faith: Psychotherapy and Pureland - paper presented at European Shin Conference 2012

Grounded in Faith: Psychotherapy and Pureland

Since the time of the Buddha people have looked to Buddhism as a source of salvation from their unhappiness and confusion. In the modern age, psychotherapy has become a route which many people choose to help them face and move beyond their personal suffering. Not surprisingly many Western therapists tend to gravitate towards Buddhist ideas and, conversely, Buddhists are often interested in exploring how their faith…

Running Tide Article

I wrote this article for Running Tide back in January but it didnt get published and as Running Tide has only just come out, things had obviously moved on. I'm putting it up here because it seems like a pity to waste a good article - or even a mediocre one!
