Working together for a better world...
People with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) often find counselling very difficult. The forum day is about exploring these difficulties and sharing what we know, to help build a therapy tool box we can use for clients.
To get a better idea of the scale of the task, we will look at the Triad of Impairment for Autism: Social communication, Social understanding and Imagination. People with ASC may be very good at basic communication and letting people know what they think and feel; their difficulties lie in the social aspects of communication and social understanding . Imagination can be a slightly confusing term. People often assume it means that people with ASC are not imaginative in the conventional use of the word, for example, they lack creative abilities. This is not the case and many people with ASC are extremely able writers, artists and musicians. Instead lack of imagination in ASC can include difficulty imagining alternative outcomes and finding it hard to predict what will happen next. These social impairments frequently lead to anxiety.
ASC is a communication issue, so we will also look at how we communicate with ASC clients, remembering we are neuro-typical so we can adapt more easily. The onus is on us to change what we do, rather than expect clients with ASC to change. We will be mainly using group discussion and pair work to find ways to better understand clients with ASC and explore the theory of mind.
Buddhist Therapists Forum is a gathering of people interested in therapy and Buddhism. We usually host a speaker/facilitator who has an interesting perspective or methodology to share. Our programme is wide-ranging and draws on different spiritual and philosophical traditions as well as Buddhism, and on a broad range of therapeutic and psychological topics.
Forums are open to anyone with an interest, but most of those who attend are practising therapists, students on counselling programmes or others who work in the mental health field. If you are unsure about attending, do ask.
Tariki students can count forums towards peer learning requirement. We provide letters confirming attendance for CPD purposes.
