An increasing number of women of child-bearing age are not having children. As therapists how do we support our clients in their decision-making process and circumstances around child-bearings, whilst bearing in mind our own circumstances, choices, prejudices and preferences?
It's becoming increasingly well documented that more women than ever before are not having children in so-called 'Western' countries. Fascinated by this phenomenon, Kamalamani wrote the book Other than Mother: Choosing Childlessness with Life in Mind to support others mulling this private decision with global consequences. This book explores the many themes that constellate around the decision to have children (or not), themes we’ll have the chance to explore: identity, gender conditioning, meaning-making, embodiment, spirituality, ecology, ecopsychology, financial security, to name but a few.
This forum will also be a chance to learn more about the phenomenon of increasing childlessness - due to choice, circumstance, and happenstance - to share our own stories of being with or without child, and to bear in mind how we work with this theme in the therapy room. Please come along - whatever your gender and whether or not you are a parent! Kamalamani longs for the day when we embrace different reproductive choices and the childfree aren't judged and stereotyped as being somehow socially deviant and the childless are supported in their grieving. So come and create new dialogues and a more accepting, diverse culture for our communities whether we're related by blood or friendship.
